a. What is It?

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of healthcare that combines healing traditions from many different cultures with the latest research in natural medicine. It is focused on prevention by assessing a person’s lifestyle, diet, environment and other factors that affect health.

Its uniqueness is that it looks for the cause of illness rather than simply treating symptoms. The natural treatments prescribed by your naturopathic doctor (ND) will be specific to you and will act to facilitate your body’s innate ability to heal itself.

As well as being effective for treating disease, naturopathic medicine can be used to increase wellness in healthy people. Sometimes people that feel they are healthy are actually functioning at a sub-optimal level. Can you recall a time when you had more energy, mental clarity, or vitality? A naturopathic doctor will help you make the necessary changes to achieve optimal wellness.

b. Therapies
NDs are the only primary care doctors that specialize in a wide variety of natural therapeutics. The treatments are based on scientific research or historical evidence for the effective treatment of disease, preventative medicine, and achieving optimal health. The therapies may include:

Intravenous Therapy
The administration of vitamins and minerals into the bloodstream in high concentrations to rapidly aid cellular healing. The advantage of intravenous (I.V.) therapy vs. oral doses of vitamins is that the nutrients bypass the stomach and get directly to the cells. This can be supportive for: integrated cancer care (high dose vitamin C therapy), fatigue, immune boosting, allergies, macular degeneration, depression, Parkinson's disease, detoxification, migraines, tissue and wound healing, chronic diseases, malnutrition and other conditions. It can even be used periodically in healthy people and athletes to enhance overall well-being. Intravenous vitamin therapy has been used safely for over 25 years, however it is only one treatment option.

Note: Dr. Korah, ND is one of a few naturopathic doctors in Eastern Ontario with advanced training and certification to perform intravenous therapy.

Clinical Nutrition
The relationship between diet and health is explored. Sometimes an IgG blood spot test for food sensitivities is indicated. Treatments that may follow include, diet modification or nutritional supplementation with vitamins, minerals and enzymes.

Botanical Medicine
Medicinal plants have been used for thousands of years for their healing properties. Plants and their extracts are used for a wide range of protocols which could include: detoxification, cellular healing, or nutritional support.

Homeopathic Medicine
This system of medicine was developed in the 1800s by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. It is based on the principle of "like cures like". Small amounts of natural substances are used to stimulate the body's self-healing mechanisms. This may involve the use of several remedies at once (complex homeopathy), or a single remedy (classical homeopathy).

Acupuncture and Asian Medicine
Asian medicine has been used in the treatment of disease for thousands of years. Energy (or chi) is rebalanced using herbal remedies and/or acupuncture. It has also been proven to be effective in pain management.
Dr. Korah utilizes Chinese tongue and pulse diagnosis to aid in his overall assessment.

Lifestyle Counselling
There are many factors that influence health such as diet, exercise, stress and emotions, toxin exposure, family history, sleep, and digestion. Dr Korah, will analyze these aspects and help you make beneficial lifestyle choices.

Physical Medicine
Hands-on treatments that may include: hydrotherapy, ultrasound, physical adjustments, magnet therapy, massage, and traditional Chinese cupping.

Professional Line Products
There are several product lines that are available through the clinic including: Advanced Orthomolecular Research (AOR), Alpha Science Labs, Cytomatrix, Douglas Labs, Genestra, Metagenics, Pascoe, Thorne, and UNDA.

These are professional product lines. This means they are of the highest quality without unnecessary additives or fillers which can cause adverse reactions. The products are of therapeutic strength and actually contain what is on the label. In addition, these companies do quality control lab testing. Since these supplements are available to patients of our clinic, the prices are often comparable or lower than regular brands found in health stores or pharmacies.

NOTE: you always have the option of obtaining products from the clinic or a store of your choice. If you find the same product at a lower cost elsewhere, please inform the clinic.

c. Education and Regulation
Licensed NDs have at least three years of university education before entering the four-year intensive full-time program for naturopathic medicine. The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto is currently the only accredited naturopathic medical training program in Canada.

The course includes training in basic medical sciences, naturopathic therapies and 1500 hours of clinical internship.

In Ontario, NDs are regulated by the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy – Naturopathy. This is a government appointed regulatory and licensing board that is responsible for professional conduct and public safety. In addition, NDs must pass North American-wide standardized licensing examinations.
